An apprehended violence order (AVO) also known as a restraining order, is an order that restricts the behaviour of a person for the protection of another person if the court believes their safety is threatened.

There are two types of AVOs:

• An APVO (Apprehended Personal Violence Order) relates to the protection of a person/s where there is no domestic relationship between the parties, eg co-workers and neighbours.
• An AVDO (Apprehended Domestic Violence Order) relates to the protection of a person/s where a domestic relationship exists between the parties. See Family Law for more information.
