What is web verification?
As we return to a degree of normalcy in these uncertain times, you may be required to have your identification verified by your solicitor or conveyancer in order to complete a property sale or purchase. You may also be required to do this for a number of other legal transactions. As the property market begins to move again, COVID-19 restrictions and social distancing requirements may make it difficult to meet face-to-face with your solicitor or conveyancer in order to complete your verification of identity.
What is the process?
Many companies were looking into web verification models prior to the start of COVID-19. As a silver lining, these programs have now been developed to help us deal with the situation, and there are many web verification products available. If you’re unable to meet face-to-face with your solicitor or conveyancer, you will be able to use one of these services instead. These will require you to take a photo or scan of your identity documents and upload them to either a website or an app. You will then need to take a photo or short video of yourself reading out a code or a sentence in order for your documents to be verified. These documents will then be checked and your verification of identity will be complete.
Using these services, along with many other technical services, such as digital signing or virtual chat and meeting rooms, will allow your solicitor or conveyancer to complete your verification of identity, as well as allow the entire transaction to be completed remotely. In the future, these systems will stay in place, making it a lot easier to complete transactions remotely.
